The Wonderful Relationship between Omar ibn Al-Khattab and Ali ibn Abi-Talib 10 By: Salwa Al-Mu'ayyad

I want to tackle an important issue related to the land of Fadak which Almighty Allah has assigned (as per Al-Hashr Chapter, verse 6) to the Prophet, peace be upon him and his Family, to provide for their daily needs. The Safavid Shiites have maliciously used a related incident to distort the image of Abi Bakr and Omar.

The land of Fadak belonged to the Jews of Banu An-Nadhir until the Muslim army, lead by Prophet Muhammad, took hold of it. Almighty Allah assigned part of this land to the Prophet to spend on himself and his family. This remained the case after the death of the Prophet except that his family did not own the land because the Prophet said, "Prophet's property cannot be inherited." He also said, "The property of us, Prophets, cannot be inherited..." It is commonly acknowledged by both Sunni and Shia scholars that the Prophets' property cannot be inherited, but rather their knowledge and wisdom.

"And what Allah restored [of property] to His Messenger from them - you did not spur for it [in an expedition] any horses or camels, but Allah gives His messengers power over whom He wills, and Allah is over all things competent." Chapter Al-Hashr, Verse:6

Fatimah bint Muhammad (PBUH) asked Caliph Abi Bakr to restore to her the land of Fadak and the remainder of the fifth of Khaibar's spoils as her father's legacy.

Abi Bakr told her what the Prophet said in his presence. Abi Bakr said, "The Prophet said, ' The property of us, Prophets, cannot be inherited, and what we leave behind is charity.' " He also said that the Prophet said, "The family of Muhammad only eats from [the revenue] of that property" adding he would not alter the will of the Prophet.

Fatimah was briefly angry because Abi Bakr refused to give her the land of Fadak, but she soon accepted that and pledged allegiance to Abi BAkr along with her husband Ali ibn Abi Talib, and she was on good terms with Abi Bakr until she passed away. When she was sick, Abi Bakr went to visit her. Ali asked her permission and she allowed him to enter. Abi Bakr said to her, "By Allah, I only left my home, property, family and kins to attain the pleasure of Allah, his Prophet and you, the Family of the Prophet."

Fatimah learned from the Prophet that a Muslim is not allowed to forsake their fellow Muslim over three days. So, she would never forsake Abi Bakr As-Siddiq as explained Al-Qurtubi when he handled this issue.

Shiite scholar, Al-Kulainy, asserts in his book, Al-Kafi, the Prophetic Saying: "Indeed, the scholars are the inheritors of the prophets, for the prophets do not leave behind a dinar or a dirham for inheritance, but rather, they leave behind knowledge."

Al-Kulainy said that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, ""Indeed, the scholars are the inheritors of the prophets, for the prophets do not leave behind a dinar or a dirham for inheritance, but rather, they leave behind knowledge, so whoever takes hold of it has taken hold of a large share."

This Saying was also cited by Al-Magli in his book, Miraat Al-Okoul (1/111)

So, why do the Safavid Shiites overlook this Saying when they handle the issue of Abi Bakr denying Fatimah the legacy of her father?

During the Caliphate of Omar, Ali and Al-Abbas went to Omar demanding what Fatimah inherited from her father (PBUH), and Omar replied saying, "I adjure you both by Allah by Whose order the heavens and earth are sustained, don't you know that the Messenger of Allah said: 'We do not have any heirs; what we leave behind is (to be given in) charity'?" The two of them said, "Yes."

Omar said, "I'll tell you about that. Allah has singled out His Messenger with this specialty." Then Omar recited verse 6 of Al-Hashr Chapter and said, "The Messenger of Allah distributed among you the properties... he never preferred himself over you."

In this concern, some may claim that Prophet Solomon inherited his father, Prophet David, but the legacy mentioned in Quran in this concern is not wealth, since Prophet David had a great number of wives and children which means Solomon could not have inherited him alone. Thus, the legacy in this sense means prophethood and wisdom which Prophet Solomon inherited from his father.

During their Caliphates, Abi Bakr As-Siddiq and Umar ibn Al-Khattab held the land the Prophet left behind but paid its revenue to the Prophet's family. The Caliphs themselves never took anything from it. This continued after Omar until the Caliphate of Ali who also refused to receive this land as inheritance, following in the footsteps of his successors, who did that fulfilling the Prophet's will. Al-Hassan and Al-Hussain followed suit afterwards. They kept the land for the public treasury and paid its revenue to the family of the Prophet.
